That said, I would probably trust a second-tier provider who charges me a subscription fee (say Dropbox or ProtonMail). IMHO any second-tier provider doesn't have as many resources to protect my data and also to keep their business rolling for the long term. I would not trust Facebook because, AFAICT, their general response to breaches is "Shrug, move fast and break things."

I've read about Fastmail, Tutanota, and Posteo for e-mail. The spam filtering is terrible, and there is no way to send secure links to files within the iCloud Drive. I use Macs almost exclusively and we pay for extra iCloud storage, but Apple's iCloud isn't great. I am not in a line of work where I am a target for surveillance or hacking, but the more I read about Google/Facebook, etc., the more I am willing to pay for stand-alone services that don't rely on scanning and selling my data to keep them in business. I'm looking to move away from Google for e-mail and cloud storage.
